Logan looked over at Alice who was sitting with Melanie in her arms who now seemed quite happy to be back with her Mommy. ‘She’s so beautiful, isn’t she?’ He said, smiling softly, gently playing with her tiny fingers. ‘She looks a lot like you.’ He commented, making a silly face at Mel causing her to smile. Logan looked back up at Alice, watching her as she spoke, a sigh leaving his lips. When he heard that she  missed him, he could feel his cheeks flushing pink. ‘Not as much as I miss you,’ he replied, semi playfully.

Logan was so natural with Melanie, as much as she couldn’t think about what could have been she was. Him being the one to go and check on her when she was crying in the middle of the night, them sitting on the couch taking turns feeding her, all of it. With out even thinking she handed the toddler back over to him. Laughing slightly she responded, “Well now my nights involve diaper changes, late feedings and washing clothes at least three times a day. You’re not missing to much.”

Logan smiled as Alice passed Melanie over to him, sitting the little girl in his lap. ‘Hey Princess!’ He smiled, bouncing her up and down lightly on her knee. ‘No way, she’s an angel.’ He said, referring to Mel. Seeing Mel and spending a little time with her made him regret so much more that he didn’t get to be a proper part in either of their lives. He knew he did so many things wrong when him and Alice were together and if he had just done one tiny thing differently it may have persuaded her to chose him over Bradley and this could have been a permanent  place for Logan. ‘I wouldn’t have minded all of that…’

“She is…” Why was she doing this to the both of them. Even though it was a nice moment it was only hurting them in the long run but still Alice let it happen. For that moment it was like they were a little family. Leaning back on the couch she rested her hand on her neck as she watched Logan with her. Even for a second time he was still a natural. Her eyes met his when he said he wouldn’t have minded and Alice knew he was telling the truth, “…I know…”

Hearing Alice telling him to stay where he was, Logan stood awkwardly by himself in the lounge, looking around waiting for Alice to come back. He took a seat on one of the couches and looked around the room, seeing a picture of Mel when she was a baby. He stood up and walked over to the picture frame, picking it up to have a closer look. After just a few minutes he turned around as he heard soft cries coming from behind him, signalling that Alice had returned.

“I think she was just a couple days old in that picture,” she said when she saw him looking at it, “We had just brought her home.” She sat down next to him, happy he stayed as she continued to rock Melanie. “I…I want us to be ok Logan…I miss you…”

Logan looked down towards the ground as Alice backed away from him, a sharp pain growing in his stomach as his arms were now empty. He knew he’d have to let go eventually but he was hoping it would have lasted a little longer. ‘You’re the only girl I’ll ever want…’ he said with a soft smile, right before noises started coming out from the baby monitor. ‘It looks like someone’s awake, say bye to her for me…’ Logan carried on his way towards the door, quickly turning his head in to Melanie’s room.

She went to say something but when she heard Mel crying she went to go pick her up but paused momentarily, “No…just…just wait ok?” She ran into Mel’s room and picked up the little girl who just wanted to be held. Rocking her back and forth she carried her back out into the living room hoping Logan would still be there.

‘I don’t deserve you…’ Logan replied quietly, brushing the soft skin on her cheek, trailing his hand round to the back of her neck. When she looked up in to his eyes he just wanted to grab her face and kiss her but he knew that would get him in to big trouble and at the moment he was more than happy with standing with her in his arms. He studied her face carefully, looking at every little detail, trying to get a fresh image of her printed in his brain.

“Logan,” she said in a soft whisper, “You deserve more than me actually…” Her fingers were lightly still pressing on his chest but she backed away slowly before she did something neither of them could take back. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to but she was scared. Scared to open up again, scared to possibly feel things all over again…everything. “Trust me you’re better off with out me…”

“I want you to be happy too…so much,” she said honestly. He deserved the world, definitely more than her and her confusing life. She took in his scent and his touch as he played with her hair. Part of her missed him so much and how safe she felt with him, comfortable too. Looking into his eyes  still it took what little strength she had left not to kiss him. It took till now for her to realize how much she truly had missed Logan. “You deserve everything in life Logan…never forget that.”

Alice held onto Logan like she was holding on for dear life. How did they get here? She knew the answer but couldn’t admit it to herself, let alone say it out loud. “I always worry about you,” she whispered. Looking up into his eyes she told him with a quiver in her voice, “You’re not a super hero. Between you and Cassie thinking you’re both invincible I just…I don’t want to see anything happen to you Logan…” With his arms around her a flood of emotions took over her body but she wasn’t sure what they were. With Bradley back and now him, she was more confused than ever.

Logan lightly played with the tips of her hair, twirling them around his fingers, trying to make the most of the short time he would have her in his arms. His finger tips lightly brushed along her neck when she looked up at him, Logan looking down in to her eyes. ‘I can look after myself, I’m a big boy…’ he reassured her even though he knew himself that wasn’t one hundred percent true. ‘I just want you to be happy,’ he whispered, gently wiping a tear away from her cheek.
